A Love Letter to Senior Moms

As Chase wraps up her freshman year of college—which is just wild to say out loud—I can’t help but think of all the senior moms out there as graduation season approaches. I vividly remember being in your shoes…feeling all the things. Pride. Excitement. Sadness. Anxiety. The overwhelming mix that comes with watching your firstborn close one chapter and step boldly into the next.

Moms, let me tell you something—something I was told but didn’t fully believe until I lived it:

Having adult children is SO. MUCH. FUN.

This season of life with Chase has been incredibly rewarding. Watching her soar, discover her independence, find new friendships, and navigate new opportunities—it’s been nothing short of amazing. She calls me nearly every morning during her walk to class, and man, those little daily moments are simply the most wonderful.  Truly, the best is yet to come.

I said this last year, and I’ll say it again: the buildup to drop-off day is actually harder than the day itself.

You cry. You plan. You stress. And then suddenly…they’re moved in. They’re ready. And deep down, you realize—you’ve done your job. You’ve given them wings.

And here’s the good news: they still need you.

It may look a little different now, but they still call for advice, still need encouragement, and yes, sometimes they’ll say, “I’m homesick, can you come get me?” And you’ll go if you can, because you’re still their safe place.

Chase has had a phenomenal first year. She crushed her academics, joined a sorority she absolutely loves, landed a fashion workshop, and made memories that will last her a lifetime. I am endlessly proud of her—but mostly, I just can’t wait to have her home in two weeks!

So, to all the senior moms out there—I see you. I feel you. You’re going to be A-OK. It’s different, yes. But it’s also deeply fulfilling in ways you can’t yet imagine……fulfilling and F U N…..I mean don’t get me started on tailgates and Mom’s weekend ; )

Now Let’s Talk DORM PREP:

One of the things that gave me peace of mind when we dropped Chase off was knowing she had everything she needed. Full transparency—she’s only an hour away, which definitely helped—but I truly believe that having her space set up and feeling “complete” made our goodbye so much easier.

Here’s one of my biggest tips: Write your goodbye letter before move-in day.

Get your emotions out on paper so you can give that hug, smile (even if it’s through tears), and walk away with grace. I didn’t want to fall apart in front of her, and having that letter—filled with encouragement and maybe a few favorite gift cards (Sephora, DoorDash, Starbucks, you get it)—helped soften the blow for both of us.

Sending you all the hugs, strength, and solidarity. You’re doing great.

You’ve got this, MOM.
